Cosmos in the Desert: Northern Nevada’s Dark Skies Festival

Experience Lahontan State Recreation Area like never before at Cosmos in the Desert, Northern Nevada’s premier dark skies festival! This unique event, hosted by the Nevada Division of State Parks and the Division of Outdoor Recreation, takes place on Saturday, April 26, from 8 PM to 12 AM at Beach 3.

Under a sky free from light pollution, attendees will discover a whole new side of Lahontan—one that extends far beyond its reputation.

  • Night sky interpretation to uncover the mysteries of the cosmos
  • Guided kayak trips for a peaceful starlit paddle on the water
  • Night animal walks exploring the park’s nocturnal wildlife
  • Astrophotography class to help you capture the perfect celestial shot
  • Educational booths with hands-on activities about space and conservation
  • A star party hosted by the Astronomical Society of Nevada, featuring high-powered telescopes
  • A glow-in-the-dark costume contest, so bring your best space-themed attire!

To preserve night vision and fully immerse in the experience, the event will be lit entirely by red lights—a signature touch that enhances the festival’s magical atmosphere.

Need to Know:

  • Camping will not be allowed within the event space on Beach 3, but it is encouraged in other areas of the park.
  • Dogs are not allowed within the event space.
  • Alcohol is prohibited within the event space.
  • Minors must be accompanied by an adult near the telescope viewing area.
  • Light, other than red colored, will not be allowed near beach 3. A flashlight conversion booth will be available at the event check in.
