Cosmos in the Desert: Northern Nevada’s Dark Skies Festival

Experience Lahontan State Recreation Area like never before at Cosmos in the Desert, Northern Nevada’s premier dark skies festival!

This unique event, hosted by the Nevada Division of State Parks and the Division of Outdoor Recreation, takes place on Saturday, April 26, from 8 PM to 12 AM at Beach 3. Under a sky free from light pollution, attendees will discover a whole new side of Lahontan—one that extends far beyond its reputation.

Interactive Experiences:

  • Telescope Viewing with the Astronomical Society of Nevada and Western Nevada Astronomical Club from 8:00PM – 12:00AM
  • Astrophotography Demonstration hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space from 9:30PM – 11:00PM
  • Night Sky Interpretation by Dr. Thomas Herring of Western Nevada College happening at 9:00PM and again at 11:00PM
  • Guided Kayak Tours from 8 PM to 9 PM, and 10 PM to 11PM.
  • Nocturnal Wildlife Walks with the Nevada Department of Wildlife happening on the hour, every hour.
  • Glow-in-the-Dark Costume Contest with prizes awarded throughout the evening

To preserve night vision and fully immerse in the experience, the event will be lit entirely by red lights—a signature touch that enhances the festival’s magical atmosphere. A flashlight conversion booth will be available at check-in.

Booths and Vendors:

  • Art in the Dark – Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation.
  • Save Starry Skies License Plates – Friends of Nevada Wilderness.
  • Walker Basin Conservancy – Hands-on educational booth.
  • Chilaquiles and Friends Food Truck – Offering food and drinks for purchase.
  • UFO (Unearthly Freeze Dried Obsessions) – Freeze-dried candy treats.
  • Nevada State Parks – Water, snacks, warming shelter, and red flashlight conversion booth.

Camping Details:

Dispersed camping is encouraged throughout the park (excluding Beach 3, day-use, and boat launch areas).
Camping fees: $15 per NV vehicle / $20 per non-NV vehicle

Admission:

$5 per vehicle for Nevada residents
$10 per vehicle for out-of-state visitors
Posters and stickers available while supplies last

  • No dogs or alcohol allowed within the event area
  • Minors must be accompanied by an adult in the telescope viewing zone
  • Only red-colored lights permitted near Beach 3
