Portico Profiles: Constructing Fort Churchill

Fort Churchill State Historic Park

Join the Park Interpreter under the museum portico for a closer look at specific aspects of Fort Churchill’s history. Program topic will change monthly. August programs will profile the construction of Fort Churchill.

Construction of Fort Churchill began in the summer of 1860 following the Pyramid Lake War. The high cost and scarcity of transportation, materials, and reliable labor plagued the U.S. Army’s efforts to make the troops as comfortable as possible in a seemingly barren and desolate region. Find out how Fort Churchill became Nevada’s first, largest, and most expensive frontier fort.
