Portico Profiles

Fort Churchill State Historic Park

Join our Park Interpreter under the museum portico for a closer look at specific aspects of Fort Churchill’s history. Program topics will change monthly. May programs will profile the Pyramid Lake War and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

The Pyramid Lake War was a series of two battles fought between the Northern Paiute Indians and joint U.S. Army and local militia forces in the spring of 1860. These battles were the catalyst for the establishment of Fort Churchill.

Bewteen 1935 and 1937, Fort Churchill was home to a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) work camp. These young men made thousands of adobe bricks in an effort to restore the fort, and they built some of the park infrastructure enjoyed by visitors today.
