Draconid Meteor Shower at Valley of Fire State Park

Date

Friday, October 9th, 2026 – Friday, October 9th, 2026

Time

6:15 pm – 10:00 pm

Sorry for the short notice! We're expecting to see between 5 and 10 meteors per hour and would love the share the experience with you on a self-guided night hike.

Tealights guide the way on the 1.5 mile (0.75 miles out, 0.75 miles back) hike to the Fire Wave formation.

Need to Know

  • This is a self-guided hike. Tealights will act as trailmarkers to guide you.
  • The West Entrance/Exit will be OPEN.
    • Our West Entrance is Closed Monday-Thursday, but OPEN Friday-Sunday. Many map apps haven't figured out the schedule and may try to route you to Exit 93.
    • If you’re coming from Vegas on I-15N, you can use Exit 75 even if your map app tells you the road is closed.
  • We are ONLY doing the out-and-back trail to Fire Wave, not the full Seven Wonders Loop or any other trail.
  • The trail is over loose sand and rough, rocky terrain. There is one area with stone steps.
  • Since this event is occurring on the new moon, it will be DARK. (A fun comparison for those of you who’ve done a full moon hike with us before!)
  • Program is weather dependent and may be cancelled without notice. Check the website and social media pages for updates before you head out.

What to Bring

  • Water
  • Hiking Shoes
  • Flashlight.
    • A red, blue, or green setting is preferred (these colors are less disruptive to others)
  • Guests may also bring chairs, blankets, and telescopes!

Schedule

Please arrive no later than 9pm.
You must be back in your vehicle no later than 10pm.

Fees & Registration

Cost is included with regular park entry fees, which can be paid at the kiosks at either entrance.
