Dutch Oven Cooking & the History of the California Trail

South Fork State Recreation Area

Join a park ranger for a Dutch oven cooking demonstration that will include a brief history of the Dutch oven as well as ideas for delicious cast iron recipes and cooking techniques. Participants will prepare and cook a wholesome Dutch oven dinner of tater tot casserole and cobbler. Dinner will be provided and reservations are required by calling 775-744-4346.

Following dinner, join local historian Jan Peterson in a campfire history presentation. She will talk about the California Trail and the history of the South Fork Area.    

WHEN: Saturday May 20. The Dutch oven program begins at 5:00 p.m. and campfire program begins at 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: South Fork State Recreation Area, East Campground Amphitheater. Take Highway 228 south from Spring Creek, turn right on Lower South Fork Road, and take the east entrance into the park. The east campground is located on the left just after entering the park and the amphitheater is located next to the restrooms on top of the hill. 

COST:  Park Entrance Fee is $5 for Nevada Residents and $7 for non-residents. Camping fees are $12 a night per vehicle for Nevada residents.
