January Events at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort

Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park

The city of Las Vegas was first settled by Mormon pioneers from Utah in 1855 with a humble adobe fort along a creek. The site later became the center of one of the most important ranches in southern Nevada. Now a state park, the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort is preserved as the birthplace of one of our nation’s most iconic cities.  Join park rangers for one, or all, unique Saturday programs and learn about the pioneer heritage of Las Vegas.

Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstration – In the tradition of pioneer Dutch oven cooking, park staff will cook up some delectable dishes the old fashioned way, in cast iron pots. Samples will be available for visitors.

WHEN: Saturday, January 7, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Native American Basket Craft - Southern Nevada has a rich history of beautiful Native American baskets. Visitors will have the chance to make their own during this self-guided crafting activity. Materials will be provided by the park. This activity is meant for children 11 and under but many adults will enjoy this as well.

WHEN: Saturday, January 14, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Old Fort Winter Campfire – What better way to embrace the winter season than with a cozy campfire in a historical setting? Enjoy complimentary hot beverages and s’mores while discussing the site’s history with a ranger.

WHEN:  Saturday, January 21, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

History Talk: The Native American Story – The first History Talk of 2017 will discuss the incredibly significant contributions of Native Americans to the Fort’s history. Using both written records and archeological evidence, this presentation will explore the relationship between the Paiutes and Las Vegas pioneers and the vast changes in Native American life that occurred during the ranching era.
