“Once Upon a Trail” series at Lahontan State Recreation on the 2nd and 4th Saturday in June, July, & August

Using beloved children’s books, this series will inspire an appreciation for nature through literature, nature walks, activities and crafts. The series will be held the second and fourth Saturday this summer. The cost for this program is free and park admission fees will be waived for those participating. Sturdy footwear, water, and sunscreen are recommended for nature hike activities. The trail is not ADA accessible nor stroller friendly. Note: some of the crafts can be a little messy. June 14:  Once Upon a Trail – Birds

Learn about birds by listening to the reading of the book Feathers for Lunch by L. Ehlert. Make toilet paper roll binoculars or a milk carton bird feeder. Enjoy a game of bird bingo or a guided bird watching hike along the trail.
WHEN: Saturday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

WHERE: Lahontan Dam River Camp, located at 16799 Lahontan Dam Road, Fallon 89406. From Hwy 50, between Silver Springs and Leetville Junction, turn south onto Lahontan Dam Road. Drive past the bridge, over the Carson River and stay on the paved road to the main entrance of the park.

June 28: Once Upon a Trail – Animals in the Woods

Learn about animals that live in the woods by listening to the reading of the book The Mitten by Jan Brett. Make a mitten-shaped bird feeder with floral wire using cereal, popcorn, and raisins then enjoy an animal scavenger hunt along the river camp’s trail.

WHEN: Saturday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: Lahontan Dam River Camp, located at 16799 Lahontan Dam Road, Fallon 89406. From Hwy 50, between Silver Springs and Leetville Junction, turn south onto Lahontan Dam Road. Drive past the bridge, over the Carson River and stay on the paved road to the main entrance of the park.

 July 12: Once Upon a Trail – Animals that Live in Water

Learn about animals that live in the water by listening to the reading of the book Box Turtle at Long Pond by William T. George and Lindsay Barrett George. Make and paint turtles with paper bowls and then view and compare a live tortoise to a water turtle along with a nature walk along the river.

July 26: Once Upon a Trail – Animal Tracks

Learn about the kind of tracks animals leave behind by listening to the reading of the book Whose Tracks are These? by Jim Nail. Make plaster of paris hand and/or foot prints and then do some foot print painting (could become messy so please plan accordingly).

 WHEN: Saturday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

August 9: Once Upon a Trail – Animals that Change

Learn about animals that change as they grow by listening to the reading of the book The Caterpillar and the Polliwog by Jack Kent. Make frog face masks and play a bug catching game, then view live frogs and/or tadpoles and take a nature walk along the river.

August 23: Once Upon a Trail – What do Animals Eat?

Learn what animals eat by listening to the reading of the book A Fly Went By by Mike McClintock. Make animal food chain nesting boxes and then view a live snake and take an ‘animal food’ nature walk and scavenger hunt.
