Summer Events at South Fork State Recreation Area from May to August

birdwatch 150x150 Summer Events at South Fork State Recreation Area from May to August SPRING CREEK, Nev. –South Fork State Recreation Area will be hosting several weekend presentation events this summer. Seating is limited and on first-come first-serve basis. Presentations may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Contact park for additional information.  The events will consist of multi-agency presentations on wildlife animals, the California Trail, and South Fork’s 25th Anniversary.

May 4:  The California Trail Demonstrations

Demonstrations will reflect the hardships, hazards and triumphs experienced by the families who dared to journey west. Journey back into time and see what life was like for these pioneers who were in search of a better life.

               WHEN: Saturday, May 4 from 2 p.m. to 2:45 .p.m. and every Saturday in May through August

               WHERE: South Fork State Reservoir is located by traveling seven miles south of Elko on State Route 227, 5.5 miles south on State Route 228, and 3.5 miles southwest on Lower South Fork Road; enter main entrance and go to top of East Campground.

               WHO: This event is open to the public. Bureau of Land Management is sponsoring the event.

May 24: Hawk Presentation

Enjoy an amazing presentation by Joe Doucette from Nevada Department of Wildlife on the wonders of hawks.  Learn the strengths, characteristics and powers associated with this raptor.

               WHEN: Friday, May 24 from 8 p.m.

               WHERE: South Fork State Reservoir is located by traveling seven miles south of Elko on State Route 227, 5.5 miles south on State Route 228, and 3.5 miles southwest on Lower South Fork Road; enter main entrance and go to top of East Campground.

               WHO: This event is open to the public.  Nevada Department of Wildlife is hosting the event.

June 8: The Great Outdoors/Bird Watching

This event will challenge bird enthusiasts to correctly identify many birds while observing them in their natural setting.  South Fork has an abundance of waterfowl every year. How many different species of birds can you identify?

               WHEN: Saturday, June 8 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

               WHERE: South Fork State Reservoir is located by traveling seven miles south of Elko on State Route 227, 5.5 miles south on State Route 228, and 3.5 miles southwest on Lower South Fork Road then turn right on Lucky Nugget Road. Follow the road approximately 6 miles and park at entrance of Fisherman’s Point.

               WHO: This event is open to the public. Robert Misiti and Nick Brunson from Nevada State Parks will be hosting the event.

June 15:  Birds of Southfork Presentation

              WHEN: Saturday, June 15 from 8 p.m.- 9 p.m.

               WHERE:  South Fork State Reservoir is located by traveling seven miles south of Elko on State Route 227, 5.5 miles south on State Route 228, and 3.5 miles southwest on Lower South Fork Road; enter main entrance and go to top of East Campground.

 WHO:  This event is open to the public. Robert Misiti will give a  presentation on the birds of Southfork.

 June 28: Bat Presentation

Discover the fascinating characteristics of the bat as Joe Doucette from the Department of wildlife discusses their habits and how they survive. After the event you are sure to keep your head up and wondering what is flying overhead during the night.

The Nevada Division of State Parks plans, develops and maintains a system of parks and recreation areas for the use and enjoyment of more than 3.3 million visitors a year. The division was established in 1963 by the Nevada Legislature to form a new state park agency within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The division manages and maintains 24 parks, historic sites and recreation areas in Nevada.
